Continua la mia fascinazione e quindi riflessione sul mondo del cavallo: se a settembre mi ero soffermata sulla monta americana, questo mese sarà su quella inglese. Il tema di questa newsletter è il comando, inteso come autocontrollo.

La scorsa domenica si è tenuto il II Raduno Rocaille a Roma: come sapete mi piace creare immagini con i vestiti, partendo da un’opera che definisce un tema. Questa volta mi sono ispirata a un’illustrazione di Jeanne Mammen, che poi ho fatto stampare su dei segnalibri, un piccolo cadeau che ho riservato ai partecipanti. Volevo ringraziare tutti coloro che sono venuti o che mi hanno anche solo scritto, sono sempre molto curiosa di conoscere dal vivo persone che mi seguono o che mi scrivono da anni. Sicuramente farò altri raduni e diventerà un appuntamento annuale fisso, ma viste le richieste stavo anche pensando di farlo a Milano il prossimo anno, iscrivetevi qui se siete interessati!

This painting, whose title I do not know, is by contemporary artist Anna Weyant. The focus on the bit, an element of control, is contrasted with the bare feet, playfully thrown over the head, a bit irreverent a bit devious.
My fascination and therefore reflection on the world of the horse continues: if in September I had dwelt on American riding, this month it will be on English riding. The theme of this newsletter will be command, understood primarily as self-control. Last Sunday the II Rocaille Meet&Drink was held in Rome and I wanted to thank everyone who came or even just wrote to me, I am always very curious to meet live people who have been following me or writing to me for years. I will definitely do more meetings and it will become a regular annual event, but given the requests I was also thinking of doing it in Milan next year, sign up here if you are interested!

Il comando è, in primis, autocontrollo
Durante le Olimpiadi di quest’estate mi è capitato di vedere una foto della Principessa Anna, famosa per il suo stile classico fatto di foulard, tailleur e cappellini, indossare degli occhiali Adidas smaccatamente sportivi. Un dettaglio di dirompente modernità quasi futurista, in mezzo a tanta composta tradizione. Anne li ha presi in prestito da sua figlia Zara, che ha gareggiato negli sport equestri alle Olimpiadi di Londra 2012, ripercorrendo così le orme della madre.
Scopro infatti che la Principessa Reale Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise (Londra, 1950) è una valente cavallerizza. Sorella di re Carlo III e figlia della regina Elisabetta II e di Filippo duca di Edimburgo (che la considerava il suo figlio preferito nonostante fosse femmina), sin da giovane si appassiona all’equitazione. Pratica lo sport a livello agonistico arrivando a gareggiare ai Giochi Olimpici di Montreal del 1976, primo membro della famiglia reale inglese alle Olimpiadi, avendo alle spalle già due medaglie d’argento, vinte un anno prima, e il titolo europeo nel 1971. Negli Anni ’70 fa discutere la sua frequentazione con Andrew Parker Bowles, scudiero della sovrana, che poi sposerà Camilla Shand, ai tempi sua conoscente e oggi regina consorte a fianco del fratello (tutto il mondo è paese).
Guardando altre foto noto che spesso indossa una spilla d’oro e diamanti a forma di cavallo (dal valore di 15000£) che appunta ovunque: giacche, cappelli e camicie. Andare a cavallo per lei è talmente scontato che ha detto: “Quando mi presento in pubblico, la gente si aspetta che io nitrisca, digrigni i denti, scalpiti per terra e agiti la coda”.
Leadership is, first and foremost, self-control
During the Olympics this summer, I happened to see a photo of Princess Anne, famous for her classic style of headscarves, suits and caps, wearing blatantly sporty Adidas glasses. A detail of disruptive, almost futuristic modernity amid so much composed tradition. Anne borrowed them from her daughter Zara, who competed in equestrian sports at the 2012 London Olympics, thus retracing her mother's footsteps.
Indeed, I find that Princess Royal Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise (London, 1950) is a valiant equestrian. Sister of King Charles III and daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (who considered her his favorite son despite being a girl), from a young age she was passionate about horseback riding. She practiced the sport competitively, arriving to compete at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, the first member of the British royal family at the Olympics, already having two silver medals behind her, won a year earlier, and the European title in 1971. In the 1970s, her association with Andrew Parker Bowles, squire to the sovereign, who would later marry Camilla Shand, at the time her acquaintance and now queen consort alongside her brother (all the world is a country), caused controversy.Looking at other photos I notice that she often wears a gold and diamond brooch in the shape of a horse (worth £15,000) that she pins everywhere: jackets, hats and shirts. Riding a horse for her is so obvious that she said: “When I appear in public people expect me to neigh, grind my teeth, paw the ground and swish my tail - none of which is easy”.
Quando ho ricominciato questo sport, qualche mese fa, la cosa più difficile a cui ho dovuto abituarmi è capire che al 50% non dipende da me e quel 50% è un animale volubile, con proprie inclinazioni e comportamento. Bisogna istaurare con lui un legame di fiducia e di collaborazione, dovuta al fatto che questo animale è stato educato per rispondere ai nostri comandi. Mi affascina capire come questo sia possibile: il cavallo è un animale incredibilmente libero. Corre da solo, sta bene negli spazi aperti, insieme ad altri cavalli oppure da solo. Ammiro la sua bellezza: maestoso, imponente ma agile, che può andare veloce, velocissimo. Guardarlo al galoppo è come rubare un pezzo di libertà.
C’è un artista inglese, Sir Alfred James Munnings (1878 – 1959), che nella sua vita ha dipinto quasi esclusivamente cavalli e non stento a credere che non si sia mai stancato. Amava particolarmente questi animali, sin dall'infanzia disegnava i cavalli del mulino dei genitori nel Suffolk. Pur essendosi arruolato volontariamente nell'esercito, fu giudicato non idoneo a combattere a causa della cecità dell'occhio destro, causata da un incidente all'età di 20 anni. Nel 1917, la sua partecipazione alla guerra si limitò a un lavoro civile fuori Reading: doveva occuparsi di decine di migliaia di cavalli canadesi diretti in Francia, spesso destinati alla morte. Fu quindi impiegato come artista di guerra per la Brigata di cavalleria canadese e in seguito divenne famoso come ritrattista equestre.
Il successo ottenuto gli permise di acquistare la casa dei suoi sogni nel 1919, quando era ancora relativamente giovane. Castle House a Dedham fu il luogo in cui visse e lavorò con la seconda moglie Violet McBride fino alla sua morte. Oggi la casa dell’artista è, così come lui desiderava, il Munnings Art Museum, che ospita la più grande collezione al mondo delle sue opere.
When I started this sport again a few months ago, the hardest thing I had to get used to is to understand that 50% is not up to me and that 50% is a fickle animal with its own inclinations and behavior. You have to establish a bond of trust and cooperation with him, due to the fact that this animal has been trained to respond to our commands. It fascinates me to understand how this is possible: the horse is an incredibly free animal. He runs alone, he is fine in open spaces, together with other horses or alone. I admire its beauty: majestic, imposing but agile, that can go fast, very fast. Watching him gallop is like stealing a piece of freedom.
There is an English artist, Sir Alfred James Munnings (1878 - 1959), who painted almost exclusively horses in his life, and I have no trouble believing that he never tired of it. He particularly loved these animals; from childhood he drew horses from his parents' mill in Suffolk. Although he voluntarily enlisted in the army, he was deemed unfit to fight because of blindness in his right eye, caused by an accident at the age of 20. In 1917, his participation in the war was limited to civilian work outside Reading: he had to take care of tens of thousands of Canadian horses bound for France, often destined for death. He was then employed as a war artist for the Canadian Cavalry Brigade and later became famous as an equestrian portraitist. His success enabled him to purchase his dream home in 1919, when he was still relatively young. Castle House in Dedham was where he lived and worked with his second wife Violet McBride until his death. Today the artist's home is, just as he wished, the Munnings Art Museum, which houses the world's largest collection of his work.
Il cavallo mi fa anche paura: mentre sono nel box, a 10 cm da lui, posso sentirne il respiro, sento il suo sguardo, se lo tocco sento la muscolatura che freme. Un essere che pesa intorno ai 500-700 kg è indiscutibilmente più forte di noi, potrebbe distruggerci con un calcio o farci cadere rovinosamente eppure si piega docilmente alle nostre volontà, ai nostri bisogni. Sono stati educati per fare quello che vogliamo. Siamo noi a comandare.
Leggevo qualcosa sulla vita della Principessa Anna: rispetto ai suoi fratelli è sempre stata la più defilata, ma non dimessa, una personalità talmente forte e ferma che non ha mai avuto bisogno di essere in prima fila. Chi è sicuro della propria posizione non ha bisogno di imporsi. Ai funerali della madre, si è presentata con indosso l’alta uniforme di capitano dei Royal Marines, prima donna a rivestire il ruolo, impassibile davanti alle telecamere (nel 1974 Anna è stata nominata Comandante in Capo del Women’s Royal Naval Service “marina militare femminile”, rinominato nel 1993 Women in the Royal Navy).
The horse also scares me: while I am in the stall, 10 cm from him, I can feel his breath, I can feel his gaze, if I touch him I can feel his quivering muscles. A being that weighs around 500-700 kg is unquestionably stronger than us, it could destroy us with a kick or make us fall ruinously, and yet it bends meekly to our will, to our needs. They have been bred to do what we want. We are in charge.
I was reading something about Princess Anne's life: compared to her siblings, she was always the most aloof, but not resigned, such a strong and firm personality that she never needed to be in the front row. Those who are sure of their position have no need to impose themselves. At her mother's funeral, she showed up wearing the high uniform of a captain in the Royal Marines, the first woman to hold the position, undaunted by the cameras (in 1974 Anna was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Women's Royal Naval Service, renamed Women in the Royal Navy in 1993).
Se la nobiltà è una condizione di nascita che si ha il dovere di esercitare, la principessa Anna lo fa con tutto il rigore e l’eleganza possibile. Il comando, nel suo caso, non implica dare ordini o imporsi con la forza, ma niente altro che esecuzione del proprio ruolo, lavoro rigoroso, controllo della sua posizione. Il comando è autocontrollo.
Se suo fratello il re Carlo III è noto per la burrascosa vita sentimentale (così come suo figlio Harry) e l’altro suo fratello il principe Andrea ha dato scandalo per la sua pericolosa amicizia con il potente criminale sessuale Jeffrey Epstein, Anna d'Inghilterra, è ammirata per il suo devoto impegno nel lavoro e per una serie di cause sociali. È conosciuta come il “membro della famiglia reale che lavora più duro” per il gran numero di impegni professionali che assume ogni anno: nel 2022 ne svolse ben 214, rispetto ai 181 di Carlo. Il suo lavoro è talmente notevole che, nel 1990, è stata candidata al premio Nobel per la pace.
If nobility is a condition of birth that one has a duty to exercise, Princess Anne does so with all possible rigor and elegance. Command, in her case, does not imply giving orders or imposing oneself by force, but nothing but execution of one's role, rigorous work, control of her position. Command is self-control.
If her brother King Charles III is known for a tempestuous love life (as is her son Harry) and her other brother Prince Andrew has caused scandal for his dangerous friendship with powerful sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, Anne of England, is admired for her devoted commitment to her work and a variety of social causes. She is known as the “hardest working member of the royal family” because of the large number of professional engagements she undertakes each year: in 2022 she carried out as many as 214, compared to Charles's 181. Her work is so remarkable that, in 1990, she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Per comandare non serve urlare: si fa in silenzio. Il comando non è una forzatura: è l’ordine delle cose. La loro gerarchia. Chi è in alto è perché ha competenze maggiori (almeno così dovrebbe essere). Stare al comando non significa fare quello che si vuole, significa anzi stare indietro, controllare tutto e soprattutto i punti più deboli, significa avere tempo per rispondere a tutti, a tutti dare o almeno far sembrare di dare attenzione. Significa eseguire dei doveri per il bene di una posizione, anche a proprio discapito.
Circondata da scandali, Anna d'Inghilterra dimostra di essere capace, nonostante tutto, di keep calm. Comandare significa prima di tutto comandare se stessi.
To command does not need to shout: it is done in silence. Command is not a forcing: it is the order of things. Their hierarchy. Those at the top are because they have greater competence (at least that's how it should be). Being in command does not mean doing what you want. Rather, being in charge means standing back, checking everything and especially the weakest points, it means having time to respond to everyone, to everyone give or at least appear to give attention. It means performing duties for the sake of a position, even to one's own detriment. Surrounded by scandals, Anne of England shows that she is capable, in spite of everything, of keeping calm. To command means first and foremost to command oneself.

Il 16 novembre si è tenuto l’attesissimo match tra Mike Tyson and Jake Paul (di cui avevo parlato nella newsletter di febbraio), ma per molti si sarebbe trattato di una montatura…
Il Calendario Pirelli 2025 torna al nudo. Le foto sono firmate da Ethan James Green, che ambienta lo shooting sulla spiaggia, cercando di aggiornare il concetto di bellezza. Un bel lavoro.
Il 18 novembre è stato il compleanno di Chloè Sevigny, 50 anni! E’ incredibile come questa donna sia rimasta più della metà della sua vita sulla cresta dell’onda. Qui una rassegna dei suoi look.

Una grande mostra al Vittoriano, in occasione del 150esimo anniversario dalla nascita, rende omaggio a Guglielmo Marconi, riunendo centinaia di documenti, reperti e foto da archivi internazionali.
A Villa Borghese è stato restaurata e riaperta al pubblico la Loggia dei Vini, un ninfeo seicentesco, che ora ospita istallazioni contemporanee.
Cinquantasei artiste, attive a Roma dal XVI al XIX Secolo, sono le protagoniste della mostra a Palazzo Braschi Roma Pittrice. Artiste al lavoro tra XVI e XIX secolo, un percorso che punta a ricostruirne le vite e l'importanza nella storia dell'arte mondiale. Fino al 23 marzo.
Alle Terme di Diocleziano a Roma è in mostra Tony Cragg. Infinite forme e bellissime, una personale in cui l’artista inglese presenta diciotto sculture realizzate negli ultimi vent’anni che entrano in dialogo con gli spazi archeologici del complesso monumentale. Fino al 4 maggio 2025.
L’archivio di Carla Lonzi, un colossale corpus di scritti, foto e lettere della grande femminista italiana, dopo lo sfratto (e le minacce di dispersione) viene acquisito dalla Fondazione Basso.

A major exhibition at the Vittoriano, marking the 150th anniversary of his birth, pays tribute to Guglielmo Marconi, bringing together hundreds of documents, artifacts and photos from international archives.
At the Villa Borghese, the Loggia dei Vini, a 17th-century nymphaeum, has been restored and reopened to the public, now hosting contemporary installations.
Fifty-six women artists, active in Rome from the 16th to the 19th century, are the protagonists of the exhibition at Palazzo Braschi Roma Pittrice. Women artists at work between the 16th and 19th centuries, an itinerary that aims to reconstruct their lives and importance in the history of world art. Through March 23.
On view at the Baths of Diocletian in Rome is Tony Cragg. Infinite and Beautiful Forms, a solo show in which the British artist presents eighteen sculptures created over the past two decades that enter into dialogue with the archaeological spaces of the monumental complex. Through May 4, 2025.
Carla Lonzi's archive, a colossal corpus of writings, photos and letters by the great Italian feminist, is being acquired by the Basso Foundation after eviction (and threats of dispersal).
A luxury hotel called Palazzo Talìa, designed by director Luca Guadagnino, has been opened where the Collegio del Nazareno once stood.

EMILIA ROMAGNA Alla Fondazione Magnani Rocca vicino Parma la mostra “Il Surrealismo e l’Italia” indaga, con oltre 150 opere, mezzi e linguaggi del Surrealismo e ne esplora l’impatto e l’evoluzione nel nostro paese. Fino al 15 dicembre.
VENETO Nel 70esimo dalla scomparsa di Alberto Martini a Oderzo (TV), nella sua città natale e sede della pinacoteca a lui dedicata con il più grande patrimonio di opere e materiali documentari dell’artista, va in scena una mostra con oltre 120 opere, tra dipinti, disegni e volumi, prestate da musei, importanti collezionisti ed eredi in molti casi inedite o mai esposte prima d’ora. SVIZZERA Al MASI di Lugano (negli spazi espositivi del LAC) una mostra sull’espressionismo tedesco con Ernst Ludwig Kirchner e il gruppo Rot-Blau, mette in evidenza i legami e le relazioni del maestro tedesco con il Ticino. Fino al 23 marzo 2025.
PRAGA Finalmente la città dedicherà un museo intero al più grande artista ceco Alfons Mucha: reduce da un recente restauro, Palazzo Savarin ospiterà il museo del pittore e scultore ceco, ripercorrendone la carriera con opere mai esposte prima e riunendo il grande ciclo pittorico dedicato ai miti e alla storia slava
PARIGI A 130 anni dalla morte Parigi dedica una grande mostra al pittore Gustave Caillebotte: Caillebotte. Dipinge gli uomini. Fino al 19 gennaio.

MILAN A major exhibition on the life and career of legendary fashion designer Elio Fiorucci has opened at the Triennale with clothes, illustrations, furniture elements and images. Through March 16.
MILAN At Campari's business museum in Sesto San Giovanni, a tribute exhibition to the greats of typography opens: Munari, Depero and others. Through June 30.
EMILIA ROMAGNA At the Fondazione Magnani Rocca near Parma, the exhibition “Surrealism and Italy” investigates, with more than 150 works, the means and languages of Surrealism and explores its impact and evolution in our country. Through Dec. 15.
