Why insolence is a rebellious act. From Jeanne du Barry to Asia Argento, via the Countess of Castiglione.
I chose this painting for a newsletter whose theme will be insolence. Lucas Cranach's Judiths are more famous, but this killer-eyed German princess has always impressed me the most. How much those eyes know, no crown of flowers will ever convince us that she is not capable of killing a man.
This month's editorial will deal with a very unsympathetic attitude. Then you will find the usual selection of news including exhibitions, articles, news and other things going on in this world. Then there are my events, travels and ebooks. Previous months' newsletters you can read in the archive. In the next paid newsletter, which I will send out on September 25, you will find my guide to Cilento, where I have been twice this summer, and I have collected a bit of information that I have not published either on the blog or on social (below you can see the preview). You can subscribe by making a minimum donation of €30 here (it is valid for one year).
Last weekend I was in Palermo for the last Rocaille Experience this year, below you can see some photos. It was the hardest one I have done, for a number of reasons, and I thought that from next year I will change several things. I was amazed to meet people who have been following me closely for years... I thought it would be nice to create a Rocaille Meet up open to everyone, to meet all the people who have written to me over time and whom for one reason or another I never got to see. Would you guys be interested? I have no idea how to do it, maybe I can't even, but if you are interested sign up here.
“Io sono io e me ne vanto”
I am me and I am proud of it
After a long time, a few weeks ago I decide to go back to the cinema to see Jeanne Du Barry - The King's Favorite. If you do not know the story, it is worth delving into it: the film tells the story of the life of Jeanne Vaubernier (1743 - 1793), a young working-class woman, hungry for culture and pleasure, who uses her intelligence and charm to climb the rungs of the social ladder one by one until she becomes the favorite of King Louis XV, causing a scandal at court.
One scene says it all: she, already his longtime mistress, must be officially presented to him according to the rules of Versailles, which require that she bow before him but without looking at him, as it would be considered a disreputable invitation. Cheeky and mischievous, instead of lowering her gaze in the bow, she stares into his eyes laughing.
The film is not a masterpiece and owes much to Sofia Coppola's more iconic Maria Antoinette (2006), where Du Barry was played perfectly by Asia Argento. Lead actress Meïwenn (47!), who is also the director, has an all-French charm and a controversial history behind her (as a very young girl she had an affair with director Luc Besson, by whom she had a daughter when she was 16). Photography and costumes are very beautiful, no plot twists or talk of pseudo-feminism. The film marks the return to the scenes of Johnny Depp, who plays the role of the immalinxed old Louis XV particularly well.
I don't want to talk about the romance, fictional or realistic, it’s the character that I like. A beautiful and brazen woman who does not accept being humble and therefore chooses to become a courtesan in order to be free. With what insolence she smiles in front of everyone, heedless of judgment and respectability. It’s a shameless, arrogant attitude bordering on rudeness that nevertheless arouses my sympathy. Jeanne is authentic in a world of artifice. What she and the king share are healthy sexual appetites and the unrepentant pleasure of being in each other's company, not giving a damn about any judgment.
I like people who have the courage for such gestures. To be insolent one has to be able to afford it. One has to be, contrary to what Cristina Campo said, very forgivable. It is an attitude of defiance that one must be confident of being able to overcome.
One has to be in a position to risk, to risk losing something, whether it be favor, comforts or otherwise a condition of privilege. What I appreciate about an insolent gesture is the risk, only in this way does insolence become a rebellious gesture and not a whim, a contestation and not tractocracy (that is always punished, rest assured). This is the real revolution.
“Io sono io e me ne vanto.
The Countess of Castiglione was not what one might call a nice character. Fanatical, capricious, petulant and haughty, most know her for the hundreds of photographs she had taken of herself in various outfits. Who was this woman who, with surrealist insight, had her photograph taken while looking out of a grommet?
Virginia Oldoini (1837 - 1899) was born in Florence, but moved with her husband to Turin, where she began to frequent the Savoy court. The Count of Cavour, prime minister as well as her cousin, immediately noticed her intelligence and unscrupulousness and did not think twice about hiring her as a "gallant ambassador" to the French court. The statesman Cavour needs something extra to "plead" the Italian cause in the upcoming peace treaties, with a view to an alliance with France for the liberation of Lombardy-Venetia from Austrian rule. He tells her, "use whatever means you like, but succeed." Thus it was that Virginia became the mistress of Emperor Napoleon III, who after all was famous for extramarital escapades. She gained much credit with him if, as was well known, Napoleon soon tired of her flirtations. Not only did she have the attentions of the Emperor of France and King Victor Emmanuel II, who followed Cavour's tactics closely, but she did so in a way that was not too secretive either. Just as she liked to flaunt her beauty, so she wanted to flaunt her power. This earned her the hatred of the other ladies of the court, with whom she had no relations, and especially of Eugenie de Montjio, Napoleon's wife, for whom Virginia had coined the motto "By birth equal, by beauty I surpass her, by intelligence I judge her." What an attitude!
"I am me and I am proud of it. I don't want anything from others and for others. I am worth much more than they are. I recognize that I may not look good given my proud, outspoken, free character, which makes me sometimes be hard and raw. So some people dislike me, but that doesn't matter to me; I don't care about pleasing everyone."
The portraits responded to her most eccentric vanity: dressed in luxurious gowns, many of them worn at parties at the court of Napoleon III. She posed now as the Queen of Etruria, now as the Queen of Hearts, breaking out into fetishistic attitudes, such as a fixation on having her feet photographed, if not downright insane, impersonating a cloistered nun. She then donated these images to her lovers, but she did much more: she even had plaster casts made of her feet or hands, also for the purpose of donating them, as well as relics of a saint. More than her image she was interested in power: "every woman has a duty to be beautiful, not for herself, but for others. For herself, on the other hand, she must be ambitious, cunning and fierce."
There is also a bit of pride in this. I am reminded of that phrase Marina di Malombra says in Fogazzaro's bleak novel:
"You don't know me, you. They wrote to me a little while ago that I am haughty, that I would like to live in a mother-of-pearl star, and that in this bourgeois planet, in this filthy star of ill fame, there is no place, for me, to set my foot."
This is not a purely feminine issue, although for men it takes on a different meaning. Flaunting one's freedom, one's pleasure in a brazen manner or exhibiting a victory, an overwhelming triumph always arouses indignation:
“What outrages in an inimitable way of life: all the very individual canons of life indispose men toward the one who adopts them; they feel lowered, as ordinary beings, by the extraordinary treatment that one accords.”

- A very elegant Charlotte Rampling made her appearance on the Venice red carpet dressed in Courreges. She was one of the most beautiful women in cinema (at least to me) who managed to make it to 77 without cosmetic surgery. It takes incredible character and personality. Real class. She was with Italian director Liliana Cavani; the two went down in film history with the controversial film The Night Porter, 1974, on which Rampling spoke. Also this year passed Mariacarla Boscono, a divine appearance amid so much vulgarity. What are they waiting for to make her godmother of the show?
- The Ippocampo publishing house kindly gifted me with the beautiful book "Extraordinary Collections" in which Marin Montagut, who is also an illustrator and designer, met famous French antiquarians and ordinary enthusiasts and photographed their unusual collections.
- My friend Livia of @libribelli reminded me of this wonderful short by Gamna entitled "Misses September," based on a true story. As she called it, it is a mix of Grey Garden and Guido Gozzano, but I see something of Otar Ioseliani in it as well.
- I had missed it, but director Sofia Coppola's first book came out.
- A summary of more or less interesting exhibitions opening this fall in various Italian museums.MILANO
